WTAMU Scholarship Established for Friona and Panhandle Students

The William and Mary Phipps Bandy Scholarship has been established to support students majoring in agriculture sciences or education at West Texas A&M University.

Preference is given to high school graduates from Friona and Panhandle. The first recipient of this scholarship is Molly Stark from Panhandle. Stark, who just completed her first semester at WTAMU, is involved in Block and Bridle, Baptist Student Ministries and Pre-Vet Club.

The scholarship is given by the family of William and Mary Phipps Bandy, who farmed and ranched in the Texas Panhandle for more than 60 years. Bill’s agriculture career spanned the era of horse-drawn equipment to GPS enabled technology. He was a Boys Ranch supporter and named Carson County Farmer of the Year. Mary valued education and led the Girl Scouts for 25 years. A lifelong learner, she greatly influenced her family members to pursue careers as professional educators.

Their five children, Kathy Adams, Janice Henson, Jeannie Allbritton, Bill Bandy and Alecia Bandy, all graduated from WTAMU. In 1985, the Bandys were recognized as West Texas State University Parents of the Year.

“My parents were great proponents of education, formal and everyday by reading on your own," son Bill Bandy said. "It was a natural fit to name a scholarship in their honor encompassing their lives of agriculture and education at West Texas A&M University. This will continue their legacy with others who never knew them."

Those interested in the scholarship can apply at wtamu.edu/scholarships by Feb. 1.
