UPD Mourns Loss of Police Officer

CANYON, Texas—It is with a heavy heart and great sorrow that the University Police Department at West Texas A&M University announces the loss of an officer. Cpl. Monty D. Platt passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8 at the UCpl. Monty D. Plattniversity Medical Center (UMC) in Lubbock. Platt’s death was a result of medical complications from being bitten by a feral cat while on duty. He had served with the University Police Department since 1996.

Platt was bitten by a feral cat two weeks ago while responding to a call on campus. On Thursday, Aug. 3, he was not feeling well and was taken to an urgent care center with a severe reaction to medication prescribed to prevent infections from the cat bite. Platt was admitted to ICU that day. He was transferred to the burn unit at UMC in Lubbock the following day because the injuries suffered from the medication were so severe. He was heavily sedated, placed on a ventilator and treated for the wounds. On Tuesday, Aug. 8, his kidneys shut down and his blood temperature dropped. He passed at UMC later that evening.

Platt’s arrangements are being handled by the Brooks Funeral Directors in Canyon. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11 at  St. Ann’s Church, 605 38th St, Canyon, followed by a graveside memorial service at Dreamland Cemetery Association, 26500 U.S. 87 in Canyon. Campus law enforcement lost a great officer in Cpl. Monty D. Platt. Everyone at the University Police Department extends prayers to the family during this difficult time.
